Dr. Markéta Gebrian is a Prague-based digital artist, a VR architect specializing in virtual reality spaces, and an independent scholar with expertise in AI architecture. Her educational journey began with studies in architecture and art at the Technical University in Liberec, Czech Republic. Markéta gained valuable experience as an architectural intern in renowned offices in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Paris, including NL Architects and Jean Nouvel Ateliers.
Furthering her studies, she pursued interior design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam through the Freemover Scholarship from the EU. Additionally, Markéta delved into architecture and urban planning at Ecole Val-de-Seine in Paris. A scholarship from the Italian Government allowed her to research Borromini and Bernini's art and architecture in Rome, where she consulted her findings at La Sapienza University. She earned her Master’s degree in architecture in 2006 from Liberec and worked as an Architectural Assistant Part II in London.
Markéta's transition to the world of art began in 2010 when she created her first digital artwork using 3D programs from her architectural background. Focusing on her digital work, she exhibited solo at Prague's Centre For Contemporary Art DOX and Fragnerova Gallery Prague in the Experimental Architecture Biennal in 2020. Group exhibitions took her work to Basel, New York, Zürich, and Miami through the Swiss art gallery Artbox.Projects.
Her academic journey continued with a PhD at the Faculty of Architecture, Department MOLAB, studio FLOW at the Czech Technical University from 2015 to 2022. She successfully defended her PhD dissertation on Architectural and Artistic Spaces Through Virtual Reality at the Czech Technical University in Prague in May 2022. Markéta actively presented her research at various architectural and art conferences globally.
Notably, she participated in the Fulbright Scholar program in the USA in 2021, conducting visiting research at the College of Design, Department of Art and Design at NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina. Markéta worked under the supervision of Derek Ham, PhD, in the Mixed Reality Lab. Following her Fulbright experience, she continued her research as an independent scholar, specializing in AI architecture, VR metaverse architecture, and digital art.
Markéta's contributions extend to her role as a VR painter at the Google conference in September 2022. Additionally, she served as a member of the advisory board team at Tomas Bata University in Zlín, Faculty of Multimedia Communications, in October 2022.
In April 2023, Markéta embarked on her visiting research in AI in architecture at La Sapienza University in Rome, Italy. During this period, she worked under the guidance of Professor Antonio Fioravanti from the Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering.
Markéta Gebrian has been honoured with the prestigious grant Mobility II from the EU/Next Generation EU, Czech Recovery Plan and the Ministry of Czech Culture in May 2023 for her artistic visiting research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology/Guangzhou campus in Guangzhou, China. Markéta worked under the supervision of Professor Zhang Kang from the Computational Media and Arts (CMA) department at HKUST(GZ).
